Southend Man Faces New Trial

A Southend man who was charged with possessing a weapon dangerous to the public will be facing another trial.

In July 2008, Chris Okemau grabbed a baseball bat and followed four men who had just attacked his wife before he was shot by an RCMP officer.

He was later acquitted of the charge but following an appeal by the Crown, a new trial has been ordered by a Court of Queen’s Bench Justice.

In a written decision, the justice questions why the trial judge sided with the accused over an independent observer who provided conflicting evidence – without giving a reason for that decision.

No new trial date has been set.
