A Metis man from southern Saskatchewan — who at one time was told he likely wouldn’t finish high school — was the keynote speaker last night at an employment networking banquet in Prince Albert.
Dr. Alika Lafontaine, the winner of “Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister” contest in 2008, talked to students and business professionals alike about the importance of networking.
He says he believes in the power of school, noting it helped him prepare for a career in medicine.
Lafontaine is currently training to be an operating room specialist at the University of Saskatchewan.
He was speaking at a SIAST Business and Industry Dinner.
The events are designed to see employers meet and talk with students enrolled in programs directly related to that employer’s operations.
Lafontaine says he values networking sessions like the SIAST dinner as they give youth a taste of what careers are possible.
