Province Considering Pulling FNUC Funding

The Minister of Advanced Education in the province says the First Nations University of Canada has to do a better job for its students.

Rob Norris says the province is considering yanking funding from the institution over allegations of misspending by senior officials.

Norris says he has been reassured by the University of Regina that the students will be taken care of should they require assistance.

However, he stresses the government won’t accept business as usual from the FNUC, and something is going to have to change.

Norris says he spoke with Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl this morning, and will be speaking with student reps this evening, and Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Guy Lonechild tomorrow.

“These are a series of consultations and conversations that are underway, and I’m being forthright in saying all options on the table, save one. And that is, what is not on the table is the status quo,” he says.

Norris says he also isn’t impressed that a report on the FNUC’s governance model, compiled by its board of directors, is not coming out until Feb. 18.

He says that report is already overdue.
