The provincial government says it hopes to roll out a new duty to consult framework by April.

First Nations and Metis Relations Minister Bill Hutchinson says the new policy will replace the interim measure the ministry has been using.

In the meantime, Hutchinson is waiting for the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations to give their official responses.

“We expect to be able to provide our formal response in April. That’s what we’re hoping for. There’s a lot that’s been going as we speak, over the months and the last couple of years. We’ve got a tremendous amount of work done, and we’re simply now waiting for the final responses of our major stakeholder groups in order to finish our work as well,” he says.

Hutchinson says he doesn’t know of any other provinces or territories that have finalized a duty-to-consult process yet.
