Hopes are high for the future of wild fur, following the first fur sale of the year.

Officials with Fur Harvesters Auction in North Bay, Ontario were very pleased with Saturday’s sale results.

Last year was a tough year for trappers, while this year prices showed some marked increases.

Chief operations operator Don Rumford says that, for example, muskrat pelts sold for an average of $2.41 more than FHA officials had anticipated heading into the sale.

Rumford says that he doesn’t know what effect the cancellation of the North American Fur Auction sale had on his company’s bottom line.

He adds that cold weather in Europe is driving up the price of the pelts, and should continue to do so.
