A lawyer who is helping residential school survivors who experienced extreme abuse apply for additional compensation says applicants should get the paperwork filled out sooner rather than later to avoid a backlog.

Eleanor Sunchild was in Stanley Mission and La Ronge earlier this week with a support team of elders and health workers.

Sunchild says the wait for compensation through the Independent Assessment Process is typically between a year and 18 months after an application has been submitted.

The deadline for filing an IAP claim is in 2012.

Sunchild will be back in Stanley Mission and La Ronge on March 24th and 25th.
