Native Enrolment Up At University of Saskatchewan

The University of Saskatchewan says its enrolment of Aboriginal students is slightly up this year as compared to the past few.
Provost and Vice-President Academic Brett Fairbairn says there are more than 1,600 self-declared Aboriginal students at the university, which he says is the most of any medical-doctoral university in Canada.
Fairbairn suspects the number is actually higher, though, because the university isn’t convinced every Aboriginal student declares their ancestry.
He also says some steps will be taken to grow the number.
Fairbairn says the university is still in the early planning stages, but hopes to make the campus more inclusive to Aboriginal students — as well as look at ways to better engage with K-to-12 students to ensure they have the proper requirements to come to university.
Fairbairn adds the university is also always looking to hire more Aboriginal faculty and staff.
