MP Waiting For Word On Boarding School Research

A questionnaire about a boarding school that operated in the Ile a’la Crosse region has been delivered to the federal government.
Rob Clarke, the MP for Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River, commissioned the study last year.
Clarke says its purpose was to gain more information about how the school operated and under whose authority.
For the past few years, survivors of the school have lobbied the government to place it on a list of institutions that would make former students eligible for compensation.
Clarke says he is hopeful the data will help convince the Office of Indian Residential Schools Canada that the boarding school should be placed on the list.
However, Clarke says there is some indication the school may have been funded by the province — and not the federal government.
He says, if that’s the case, a dialogue may have to be opened with the provincial government.
Clarke is not sure how long it will take for a decision to be made.
