The Pelican Lake First Nation has elected a new chief.

Challenger Dennis Lewis defeated long-time leader Peter Bill in a vote held on Friday.

Lewis finished with 391 votes, while Bill received 234.

Lewis’ victory ends a long protracted battle on the reserve between Bill and a number of residents who complained of voting irregularities during past elections.

Six councillors were also elected on Friday.

They include incumbents Fred Whitehead and Jimmy Bill and newcomers Calvin Thomas, Willie Thomas, Gary Thomas and Pete Sakebow.

All of the terms are for three years.
