Liberals Set To Name New Northern Candidate

The federal Liberal Party has apparently found its next candidate for the riding of Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River — and it’s not former candidate David Orchard.

It appears Gabe Lafond, the current treasurer for the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan, will carry the Liberal Party banner in the next federal election.

Born and raised in Green Lake, Lafond was the sole candidate for the nomination when the deadline for nominations passed a few weeks ago.

A formal nomination meeting is scheduled for Saturday in Meadow Lake.

Lafond says he was prompted to run for the party because he feels it represents the interests of all Canadians and focuses on the needs of grassroots citizens.

He says he is preparing to hand in his resignation as MN-S treasurer shortly, with his last day of work likely to be Feb. 15.

Lafond says he was surprised that he was the only person to enter the race.

He believes his experience in Metis affairs will serve him well in his campaign.

A Liberal Party official confirms Orchard didn’t seek the nomination.

Orchard was not immediately available for comment.
