Inconsistencies In Testimony At Sand Trial: Lawyer

A trial is continuing today for a man from the Mistawasis reserve who is facing two counts of second-degree murder.

Hubert Conrad Sand is alleged to have shot and killed Greg Whitefish and Dwayne Badger on September 3rd, 2006.

Friends of Sand have testified that shots rang out after two carloads of people arrived at Sand’s house the night in question.

They said they were there to avenge the beating of one of their friends.

However, under cross-examination, witnesses acknowledged a lot of alcohol had been consumed — and at least one of them said he had been hit in the head during the melee.

At least two men have testified they saw Sand holding a rifle when shots rang out on the reserve.

However, Sand’s lawyer, Greg Chovin, has pointed out several inconsistencies in their statements between what the two men told police and what they said in court.

Chovin also suggested to one of the witnesses, Neil Sanderson, that he himself had fired a shot during that fateful night — an allegation Sanderson denied.

The trial is scheduled to last three weeks.
