The Saskatoon Health Region has set a goal of nearly tripling the number of Aboriginal employees in its ranks.
The health region has developed a four-year plan that aims to make the workforce more representative of Aboriginal clients.
Spokesperson Cathy Nilson says the goal is to reach 10 per cent of region employees being Aboriginal.
She says one of the goals is to include a respect for all views of what health is, recognizing that different cultures may have different ideas on how health should be delivered.
Nilson says the region is also working in partnership with institutions like Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology, where students taking the special care aide program also work in the region while studying.
Currently, Aboriginal employees make up less than four per cent of the health region’s workforce.
