Government Pledges To Address Stolen Sisters Issue

The federal government is pledging to address the issue of murdered and missing Aboriginal women in the country.
In today’s throne speech, the government says it will take additional action to address the disturbing number of cases that have been recorded.
Shirley Henderson of the Prince Albert Grand Council Women’s Commission says she is glad to hear the government’s pledge.
However, she wants to know how much funding will actually be devoted to the effort, noting her group’s memorial walk in honour of missing women still receives no federal dollars.
The government also says it plans to introduce further measures to improve drinking water on reserve, a campaign it started back in 2006.
Other promises in the speech include the need to ensure fair distribution of property on reserve when marriages break down, and the need to amend certain portions of the Indian Act that were ruled to be discriminatory.
