An Aboriginal politician is encouraging First Nations youth to change addresses if they’re at serious risk of being recruited into a gang.
Before he became a Sask Party MLA, Serge LeClerc was at one time a criminal overlord, running a $130-million drug operation.
Speaking yesterday at SIAST’s Woodland Campus in Prince Albert, LeClerc said he knows how gang leaders prey on young recruits until they join.
He says anyone who feels like they can’t escape the lifestyle may want to consider going to a relative’s house or changing communities.
LeClerc says young people also need to realize they’re not locked into anything.
He adds that education can help open doors for those who are struggling, but in the end, it’s up to individuals to determine their own future.
