FSIN Will Release Own Duty To Consult Strategy

A First Nations strategy on the duty to consult process could be finalized by this Thursday.
Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Vice-chief Lyle Whitefish says he’s glad the province has decided to wait for the FSIN’s input before it releases its own policy, due out in April.
Whitefish says the interim measure that’s currently being used is lacking.
“Basically, in Saskatchewan, the chiefs have rejected the Saskatchewan guidelines…. What we draft will be a template for First Nations to use in all of the 74 First Nations (in the province),” he says.
Whitefish says the new strategy must be a united one that takes into account all First Nations’ voices.
He didn’t get into specifics of what he wanted to see from the government, but did say whatever framework is drafted must ensure predictability and certainty.
