File Hills Police Service Expands

The seven members of the File Hills First Nations Police Service will be getting some help on the prevention and intervention side of their job.

The police service now has five special constables, who — unlike officers — will not be armed.

Instead, File Hills Police Chief Ralph Martin says they will work with students to get them involved in sports rather than gangs, and work on some conflict resolution in all of their communities.

Martin says having these constables will free up time for the police officers.

The special constables are part of a two-year pilot program funded by the provincial and federal government.

Recently, the FSIN announced it is working in partnership with SIAST to train First Nations peacekeepers to assist RCMP officers in their home communities.
