Federal Aboriginal Diabetes Program In Jeopardy

An outreach worker is raising alarm bells over the looming closure of the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative.

ADI executive director Dina Bruyere says up to 600 programs aimed at combating the deadly disease could be lost if the federal government doesn’t renew the program.

The $190 million initiative was launched five years ago.

Bruyere says something must be done, because Aboriginal people do not have the same level of access to doctors and other health specialists that is available to other Canadians.

She says, at the very least, the government should create a measure aimed towards Aboriginal youth.
