A Metis official says progress is being made in the effort to have a 1930s Metis settlement recognized as a heritage site.
Bryan Lee of Metis Local 108 says the provincial government recently gave his group $1,000 to commission a study on Fish Lake.
Located near Emma Lake, the site was home to 12 Metis homesteads after the turn of the century.
Lee says they are now asking the government for another $1,000 to erect signs in the area alerting the public to the significance of Fish Lake.
He says 2010 is shaping up to be an important year for the Metis people and he doesn’t want Fish Lake to be left behind.
Lee says the effort began with a homecoming last year and has been gaining momentum since then.
