Closing Arguments Given At Mistawasis Murder Trial

An 11-member jury will now determine the fate of a Mistawasis man accused of fatally shooting two men on the reserve back in 2006.
Both the Crown and defence wrapped up their cases at Court of Queen’s Bench in Prince Albert this morning.
It was back in September of 2006 that two rifle shots killed Greg Whitefish and Dwayne Badger during an incident near a house.
Defence lawyer Greg Chovin maintains the accused, Hubert Conrad Sand, acted in self-defence when he shot Badger — and that it was a friend of the accused who shot Whitefish while he was fleeing in a car.
The Crown isn’t buying that argument.
Prosecutor Peter Ryhorchuk says the shot that killed Whitefish couldn’t have come from the bush where Sand’s friend was hiding, because the angle was too great.
He also says the shots happened too closely together for someone other than Sand to have fired the shot.
Ryhorchuk also argues Sand didn’t need to shoot Badger to begin with.
The jury will begin its deliberations tomorrow morning.
