Cigar Lake Remediation Clears More Hurdles

Cameco announced today that crews safely re-entered the main working level of the Cigar Lake uranium mine yesterday.

According to the company, the mine has been fully dewatered and the main shaft refurbished — including installation of the ladderway, replacement of electrical and mechanical components, and extension of the in-shaft pumping system.

The company says workings at the 420-metre level, where the last water inflow occurred, have been inspected and secured.

Cameco says safe access to the 480-metre level has also been established — and work to inspect, assess and secure the underground development has begun.

Work to secure the underground is expected to be complete before October, depending upon the condition of the mine.

Spokesperson Lyle Kraun says that they will have more information on the project later in the month.
