The chief of the Canoe Lake First Nation says he feels responsible as a leader in the death of a young boy on the reserve over the weekend.

It’s believed three dogs killed 10-year-old Keith Iron on Saturday.

According to the RCMP, the dogs were still “disturbing” the boy’s remains when his body was discovered.

Chief Guy Lariviere says there are bylaws that say aggressive dogs are to be tied up, but he says there is difficulty enforcing the bylaws because there isn’t enough money or resources.

The three dogs in question had owners and Lariviere says neighbours had complained about them barking at people who walked by — so under the bylaw the band asked them to be tied up.

They were not tied up the day the incident took place.

Lariviere says he and the council will have to look at the bylaws and what can be done to avoid a tragedy like this happening again.

Lariviere also says Iron was well-liked in the community and was being raised by his father, who Lariviere says was doing a great job.

He says, so far, his father is being very strong.

Lariviere adds the entire community is still trying to come to terms with the boy’s death.

Counsellors are helping band members deal with the tragedy.
