Prince Albert’s boxing club has been re-named after a Metis war veteran.

The club, which has been operating since 1986, will now be known as the Thomas Settee Boxing Club.

The coach of the club, Bob Tichkowski, says Settee helped him out when he was getting started and he figured it was time to return the favour.

The now 95-year-old Settee fought in dozens of fights several decades ago winning titles in the army.

He is also one of the last surviving veterans to fight on the beaches of Normandy.

Tichkowski says he hopes the club’s new name helps attract more Aboriginal youth to his gym.
