The Dream Centre in Beauval has recieved nearly $46,000 in order to develop programming for the upcoming year.

The friendship centre had asked the federal government for $50,000 in order to keep their staff and generate new programming, focusing specifically on culture.

The money is coming from the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Cultural Connections for Aboriginal Youth initiative

Administrator Angus McKay says they already have crafts and sports, so the cash will be used to expand what they can offer.

According to the federal government, the Dream Centre — supported by the Sipisihk Metis Local #37 in partnership with the Northern Village of Beauval — will give local youth “a safe place to study, receive guidance from elders, and reconnect with Metis traditions and Aboriginal culture.”

It will “foster positive and healthy lifestyles for local young people through life skills presentations, cultural and health workshops, and team sports.”

The centre is open after school and weekends on a drop-in basis.
