Aboriginal Storytelling Month Officially Underway

Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month kicked off yesterday in Saskatoon.

Hundreds of students gathered at the First Nations University of Canada campus where they heard a story about the otter hide, learned the significance of the hand drum and also how to round dance.

Sylvia McAdam with the Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre says the event is held in the winter because Aboriginal people have historically shared their stories while the snow is on the ground.

Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month originally began as a special week six years ago, but grew to a month-long celebration with increased demand.

For the next month, communities around the province will hold feasts and gatherings to share stories.
