Aboriginal youth were recognized in Saskatoon Friday night, at the SaskTel Aboriginal Youth Awards of Excellence.

One of those winners was Marcella Tsannie from the Hatchet Lake Denesuline Nation.

The 16-year-old won the culture award.

Dene is her first language, and she is the only student in her Dene language and culture class to earn a 99 per cent.

Tsannie has learned the traditional ways of caribou hunting, preparing, and cooking from her grandparents.

Eight other awards were handed out, in categories such as community service, spirit, and outstanding achievement.
