Yellow Quill Step Closer To Treatment Centre

A regional director with Health Canada says it’s too early to say whether or not a wellness centre will be built on the Yellow Quill First Nation.

However, Peyasu Wuttunee says the department is very interested in taking a look at whatever plans the residents may have.

Yellow Quill and two other bands were recently granted $120,000 to develop plans for a facility which could treat residents struggling with social problems.

Wuttunee says the need for a Saulteaux-specific healing centre still has to be demonstrated.

Yellow Quill Chief Robert Whitehead says it’s too early to know at this point just how the centre would work, or what social ills it would target.

A meeting between the bands and the federal government is taking place today.

It has been roughly four months since the freezing deaths of two toddlers shook the Yellow Quill First Nation, prompting calls for its residents to receive help.
