Work Underway at Northern Airport

The runway at the Stony Rapids Airport is getting a 1.3-million-dollar facelift.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation spokeswoman Kirsten Leatherdale says the department would have preferred to do the work much sooner, before the new hospital in Stony Rapids opened, but she says the department had to wait nearly four years for the money.

Leatherdale adds that most of the work being done is to improve problems with the runway’s drainage system.

Leatherdale says people travelling to or leaving Stony Rapids shouldn’t be concerned because most of the work is being done at night.

Crews will be working this fall until weather conditions make work impossible. If it’s not finished by that point, the work will commence next spring.
