Saskatchewan’s Highways Minister says work on a long-awaited all-weather road to Wollaston Lake will begin by the end of the month.

Buckley Belanger notes environmental impact assessments have prevented work crews from starting the 102 km road since the project was first announced two years ago.

However, he says it appears both the provincial and federal environment departments are about to give the project their blessing.

Belanger says five northern contractors have submitted proposals to clear bush from the first 35 kms of the proposed new route — and a tender will be awarded by month’s end.

Wollaston Lake currently relies on a winter ice road and summer barge to move necessary supplies in and out.

The entire road is slated to be finished by 2009.
