Bands from Saskatchewan’s Woodland Cree territory are being represented in Southend this week at an annual gathering.

Members of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, the Montreal Lake Cree Nation and the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation are set to discuss issues of mutual concern within their traditional lands.

PBCN councillor Darren Morin says the duty to consult issue will be the main topic up for discussion.

However, he notes many local residents want to talk about the impact the nearby Whitesand Dam is having on their community.

He says the structure causes lake waters to constantly rise and fall, and many residents question the dam’s value to their way of life.

Morin adds the community would like to see some compensation from SaskPower over the situation.

This week’s gathering is slated to wrap up Thursday morning.
