Five women were honoured for implementing and protecting treaties during the FSIN fall assembly Wednesday.
They are Margaret Starblanket, Beatrice George, Maria Tobacco, Caroline Poorman and Sharon Bird.
Bird’s sister, Bev Bird, accepted honours on her behalf.
Acting chief Delbert Wapass says it hasn’t always been easy for these women to defend treaties — but they did it.
“Defending treaty is not an easy job, because we come from a vast (range) of experiences, whether we were adopted out, whether it was residential school, whether it’s abuse, single parent families, so on and so forth. But yet, we will have our leaders that will stand there, with their partner, with their wives, with their friend, with their supporter,” Wapass says.
The woman were wrapped in ceremonial blankets, and an honour song was sung for them.
