The Saulteaux First Nation near the Battlefords held its chief and council election yesterday.

Sarah Gopher is the new chief.

She is the sister of former chief Gabe Gopher.

She defeated incumbent chief Brian Moccasin and two other candidates, capturing over half of the total votes cast in the process.

Saulteaux also has four new band councillors — Curtis Moccasin, Greg Moccasin, Gary J. Moccasin and Leo Moccasin, Jr.

Don Night was the only incumbent councillor to be re-elected.

Over 400 people voted in yesterday’s election, representing about 85 per cent of the eligible voters.
