Wollaston Lake Barge Back In Service

A barge in Saskatchewan’s Far North that had been out of commission since last Thursday is back in service.

The breakdown left several thousand litres of fuel and construction supplies headed for the community of Wollaston Lake sitting on the other side of the lake.

Community leaders were becoming concerned because freeze-up is only a few weeks away.

But Saskatchewan Highways spokesperson Kirsten Leatherdale says the repaired transmission was installed last night and the shipment of supplies is now underway.

Leatherdale also says any talk of replacing or upgrading the barge is not realistic, since the province plans to have an all-weather road to Wollaston Lake in place by 2009.

She also says back-up transmissions for the barge will be more readily available in the future.
