Wollaston Ice Road Still A Few Weeks Away

A Department of Highways official says it will likely be the last week of February before light vehicles can use an ice road to Wollaston Lake.

But Kirsten Leatherdale says it’s anyone’s guess as to when ice roads to Stony Rapids and Fond du Lac will be built.

Leatherdale says 10 kms of the ice road to Wollaston has been completed, with another 36 kms to go.

However, she notes the situation is less promising near Fond du Lac, where there’s still 5 to 8 kms that’s not adequately frozen.

Leatherdale says the road to Wollaston, when it’s ready, will likely have the minimum allowable ice thickness — which means it will be off limits for heavier trucks.

Last year, the ice road to Wollaston was officially opened on February 18th.

The ice roads to the Far North will be officially closed on March 31st.
