Past and present recipients of the Northern Saskatchewan Student Achievement Awards gathered last night in La Ronge to celebrate the program’s 20th anniversary.

The program recognizes high school students’ accomplishments in academics, community involvement, and participation in cultural traditions.

Students are eligible for both the Lieutenant-Governor’s Awards of Excellence — one of which is handed out each year to a northern student at each grade level, from Grades 7 through 12 — and the Northern Saskatchewan Student Achievement Awards.

Bill Hutchinson, Saskatchewan’s minister of First Nations and Metis Relations, says that it is very important to honour students for taking part in cultural activities.

“Keeping in touch with your cultural roots, finding out who you are and becoming knowledgeable and proud about your culture and your history is one of the major keys to success in life,” Hutchinson says.
