Wiks On The Way Out
Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at 13:18
Saskatoon deputy police chief Dan Wiks announced his retirement today.
As a result, police chief Russ Sabo is dropping his bid to have Wiks disciplined for remarks he made to a reporter about the Neil Stonechild affair.
Sabo charged Wiks with two counts of discreditable conduct two years ago after it was revealed Wiks lied to a reporter about police involvement in Stonechild’s death.
Wiks initially claimed to have not known that two police officers were suspected of dumping Stonechild at the edge of the city in freezing temperatures in November 1990.
Wiks later recanted.
Saskatoon Tribal Council chief Joe Quewezance says Wiks’ departure will help mend the relationship between the Saskatoon police and Aboriginal people living in the city.
