An American-based environmentalist claims forestry giant Weyerhaeuser is playing fast and loose with environmental controls in the Pasqua-Porcupine

management zone in northeast Saskatchewan.

Paul West of the Rainforest Action Network says his group has government documents that confirm Weyerhaeuser has exceeded its summer logging allowance by 100 per cent.

He also says the company owes the crown over $1 million in fines for these violations, but hasn’t paid up.

He says the fact Weyerhaeuser inherited a policy that’s been called unworkable by Saskatchewan government officials is not an excuse.

Weyerhaeuser spokesman Wayne Roznowsky says there’s really no way of knowing whether or not they’ve violated any rules because its original Forest Management Agreement is so ambiguous.

He says the company is trying to amend the agreement to make sure it is in compliance.
