The manager of Weyerhaeuser’s Forestlands division in the province says a renewed focus on accountability is the single biggest reason behind his group’s recent improvement in safety.

For the past 394 days, none of the division’s 50 workers have required medical attention or first aid.

Stan Holmes says the credit belongs with the workers who were challenged to not put results before safety.

The result, he says, has been a more relaxed and effective work environment.

Holmes says there has also been a 40 percent reduction in the amount of injuries recorded by contractors.

He notes improvements to machinery in the past year have been minimal — meaning most the improvement is tied to precautions taken by workers.
