A group of northern Saskatchewan communities are looking to explore business opportunities in Fort McMurray.

Stakeholders from northwest Metis communities and First Nations have established a new, permanent office in the booming Alberta city — hoping to secure training and business options for northern people.

Beauval Mayor Alex Maurice says this is the best way to get northern people trained for the oil industry in preparation for an expected boom.

The other communities involved are Cole Bay, Buffalo Narrows, La Loche, and Ile-a-la-Crosse.

The provincial and federal governments recently announced combined funding of $153,000 to support the initiative.
