Opening ceremonies for the much-anticipated “Gathering of the Elders” in La Ronge are underway.

Hundreds of onlookers are taking in the event at the Elks Fair Grounds main stage under sunny skies.

Premier Lorne Calvert and Lieutenant-Governor Lynda Haverstock are just two of the dozens of dignitaries that are on hand for this afternoon’s festivities.

Actor Gordon Tootoosis is acting as emcee.

The four-day gathering is designed to allow northern elders to visit with their peers and share traditional teachings and skills with younger generations.

Green Lake elder Marius Bouvier welcomes the opportunity, and says too many communities are failing their youth by not connecting the young people with elders.

The elders gathering is taking place at the Elks Fair Grounds.

Organizers say the event is expected to draw about 5,000 visitors to La Ronge over the next four days.
