A First Nations-owned sawmill near Prince Albert is preparing to re-open its doors after a lengthy shutdown.

Machinery at Wapawekka Lumber near Prince Albert has been silent since December of last year.

However, according to company president Steve Smith, the mill should be running in just over a month’s time.

Smith explains the company has figured out ways it can cut costs and improve output, which should let it re-enter the marketplace on a more competitive level.

Smith says the company intends to hire back most of its former employees but realizes many of them may have already moved on.
