The board of Wanuskewin Heritage Park is now searching for a new CEO.

Last night, the board voted in favour of firing Sheila Gamble from the position.

In October, the board received a report from an independent investigator that outlined problems at the park — including a lack of board oversight by the CEO, pay disparities between non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal employees, and a relationship between the CEO and the elders’ cultural advisory board that had suffered “irreparable” damage.

Board chair Jack Hillson says the board faces challenges in public relations, but is committed to rebuilding the name of Wanuskewin among Aboriginal people and the broader community.

He says it hopes to hire a qualified First Nations person — and if not, someone who at least has First Nations sensitivity and experience.
