Saskatchewan residents have voted and the walleye has emerged as the fish species that most people feel best symbolizes the provincial fishing industry.

An overwhelming majority of Saskatchewan voters chose the walleye in the Centennial Provincial Fish Emblem Contest, which wrapped up last month.

The walleye beat out five other native fish species, including the lake sturgeon, the lake trout, the northern pike, the lake whitefish, and the yellow perch.

Saskatchewan Environment officials say they received over 10,000 on-line and mail-in votes from the public.
