A walk to honour the memory of a former northern Saskatchewan politician is taking place today.

Canoe Lake band councillor Maurice Iron and Athabasca MLA Buckley Belanger are marching 40 kilometres from the Beauval junction to Canoe Lake to honour the memory of Lawrence Yew.

Yew was one of the first Aboriginal MLAs to be elected in Western Canada, and also worked as an administrator for several northern communities over the years.

Iron is Yew’s nephew, and says he wants a monument to be erected in his uncle’s memory.

Iron and Belanger hope to finish the walk in two days, and are accepting donations to help build the monument at his gravesite.

Members of Yew’s family have given the event their blessing.
