A walk to honour the memory of the late Lawrence Yew wrapped up in Canoe Lake yesterday.

Maurice Iron, a nephew of the former northern Saskatchewan MLA, says he and Athabasca MLA Buckley Belanger finished their march at the graveside of the late politician.

The two walked 40 kilometres from the Beauval junction to Canoe Lake in a bid to raise money to erect a monument in Yew’s memory.

Iron says they managed to raise about $4,500 — mainly through donations from northern communities.

Iron says he wants to begin building the monument as soon as possible, and is still accepting donations.

Yew was one of the first Aboriginal MLAs to be elected in Western Canada.
