A woman accused of giving birth and then abandoning her baby in a toilet in a Wal-Mart washroom stall made her first court appearance in Prince Albert yesterday.

The incident, which happened in May, made headlines across the country and sparked a fundraising drive for the care of the infant boy.

He is currently in the custody of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and is said to be doing well.

Crown prosecutors opened yesterday’s hearing by telling court they intend to proceed by indictment.

Defence lawyer A.J. Krishan asked the judge for a publication ban — meaning nothing that can identify the woman will be released.

The judge agreed and set the next court date for October 17th.

The woman is currently not in custody.
