A vigil to honour the life of Louis Riel was held in Regina yesterday.

People gathered near the Regina RCMP depot where the Métis leader was executed.

Nov. 16 marks the day Riel was hanged for treason, 124 years ago.

Tracey Stevenson was there, and she says a closer look at Riel’s life is needed.

“Some people would call him a hero, some people call him a traitor, but it all depends on the way that history views him and what kind of a lens it uses. And I don’t think a real close look has been given to Louis Riel,” Stevenson says.

The Flatland Reelers provided entertainment for the event, and community members joined together for a meal of soup and bannock.
