Vermette Announces Bid For Cumberland Seat

Another northerner is announcing his intention to bid for Joan Beatty’s vacant seat in the legislature.

Air Ronge resident Doyle Vermette is seeking the NDP nomination in the Cumberland riding for the soon-to-be-called by-election.

Vermette says he started thinking about taking a stab at provincial politics about two weeks ago.

He is a board member of both the Northern Lights School Division and the Gabriel Dumont Institute, and is a former president of the Metis local in La Ronge and a former village councillor in Air Ronge.

Vermette believes his experience in those roles has prepared him to attempt a jump to provincial politics.

If he succeeds in winning the nomination and the pending by-election, Vermette says one of his priorities will be making sure attention is paid to northern schools in need of upgrades.

Earl Cook has also expressed his intention to seek the NDP nomination — and Vermette says he’s heard talk there are others who are also interested.
