Urban Reserve Era Set to Dawn in Regina

Regina will soon have its first urban reserve.

Members of the Nekaneet First Nation recently ratified an agreement that will see its existing land — located in Regina’s industrial area — eventually converted to reserve.

The property includes a commercial mall, which currently houses a band-owned holding corporation.

Nekaneet has already negotiated a municipal services agreement with Regina city council, which compensates the city for lost tax revenue.

This will be Saskatchewan’s 30th urban reserve. They are already situated in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle and a number of smaller communities.

To date, all urban reserves have been created as a result of land claim settlements.
