Uranium Industry Looking For Potash-Like Perks

A Saskatchewan-based uranium mining company is hoping the uranium sector gets the same kind of tax initiatives the province has introduced for the potash industry.

Yesterday, the provincial government announced new incentives for potash companies to invest and expand in the province.

The measures include a 10-year tax holiday from base payments on expansions of potash mines that meet a minimum production standard.

Cameco Corporation spokesman Lyle Krahn says even though uranium exploration is booming right now, that shouldn’t stop the province from encouraging more investment.

Saskatchewan’s potash sector is also enjoying some good times, posting record sales in 2004.
