Two young men are probably lucky to be alive following a spectacular crash in La Ronge over the weekend.

The RCMP say a car was traveling at a “very high rate of speed” on Queen Street when it lost control, hit a driveway, flew through the air, and hit a power pole about 8 feet off the ground.

The Mounties say the pole was almost broken off, and the occupants were initially trapped inside.

The 18-year-old male driver from La Ronge and a 24-year-old male passenger from Beauval were eventually freed by emergency services personnel using the jaws of life.

The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and later released.

The passenger was flown to a hospital in Saskatoon with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The RCMP say witnesses report seeing the car being followed by a black SUV just before the crash.

The Mounties say alcohol and speed are believed to be factors.

No charges have been laid at this time.
